The Story

Silk has held its place as the first fabric of choice in dressmaking – for it has no match when it comes to feel, drape and strength. From wedding dresses to royal ceremonial attires to holy vestments, silk signifies luxury, power and stature. But more than anything else, the luminous shimmer of silk makes it unique – it is subtle and opulent all at the same time.

Painting on silk developed as an art form in the absence of fabric printing in the early stages. To ensure that the designs did not alter the luminous quality of the fabric, thin dyes are used which penetrate the threads rather than form a film on the surface. Resist methods similar to batik are therefore needed to dye the fabric in the designs required. In silk this is known as the serti (fencing) technique. The process is complicated and time consuming but results in unique hues and shades that shine with the silk.

The pink peonies are significant in silk paintings and represent honor, romance and prosperity.
